The story behind this photo:

This moment was 18 months in the making.

When COVID first hit, I found myself with plenty of time on my hands.

I’d go on daily walks around my area in Sydney due to the restrictions, and one day spotted a clearing in the trees that overlooked the Georges River. With the calm water, boats and bushes, it was the perfect frame that just needed the perfect sunrise to top it off.

I’d often walk past, wondering when I’d finally get the chance to line up the shot with a sunrise that was worthy of the location.

Fast forward 18 months and that moment finally happened on September 10.

With Sydney in lockdown and me pounding the pavement again, I raced to this spot with the sky beginning to light up.

It was an explosion of colour and one of the best sunrises I’ve witnessed; well worth the early rise for a moment of joy in what has often been a dull and tough time in Australia.

It might’ve been fleeting, but it’s something I’ll appreciate for a long time to come.
