Thank you Mary, for allowing me this time to speak.
I am not speaking officially, or on behalf of The Institute of Electrical Inspectors (the I.E.I.), although I will highlight David’s involvement in that organisation.
We have all known or heard of people of whom it is said, “they are dedicated to a cause”. If ever that could be said of anyone, it can certainly be said of David Thomas Smith.
Sometimes, contrary to Mary’s wishes for his health and welfare, David showed an unswerving loyalty to many things throughout his life, none the least of which was The Institute of Electrical Inspectors. A man of strong convictions, David was either all for it, or all against it. In it up to the hilt, or not in it at all! There were seldom any half measures – down to earth, black or white. This was David. His friendship was the same – unequivocal.
I met David when I first became an Electrical Inspector and joined the I.E.I. in the early 1980’s and a close friendship followed. Very soon, David was encouraging me to become a member of the Management Committee.
He was an amazing ambassador for the I.E.I. – always on the lookout for new members, and continually encouraging members to hold office on the committee. No wonder at all that he attained the highest honour the National Body could bestow upon him, that being the ‘Bert Halse Award’ for outstanding service to the Institute.
David was also made a Life Member for his untiring dedication to the cause, having held most official positions, including many times and many years as Secretary, Federal Councillor and President. No member deserved more accolades from his peers – no one did more than he did.
Today, we gather here to celebrate David’s life and to express our esteem and love for him for the part he played in helping and inspiring us to be better people in the community.
I now want to express my own heartfelt understanding to Mary, her family, and her extended family.
Now David is beyond the suffering and extreme discomfort he so stoically endured in recent weeks and months. But David is not dead, as long as he lives on in our hearts and minds – with all our thoughts of warmth and gratitude towards a very loyal, sincere and genuine friend.
